The theoretical framework for sustainable development evolved since 1972 through a series of international and UN conferences and initiatives. From the initial perspective of environmental protection towards the inclusion of o the social and economic dimensions of sustainable development, conservation and management of natural resources, the role of major groups, and means of implementation.
Defining and implementing sustainable development has had to deal with the tensions between the three pillars, and the prevailing “influences” at different points in time.

A dynamic balance among many factors, including the social, cultural and economic requirements of humankind and the imperative need to safeguard the natural environment of which humanity is a part.
